You grab the sword and make your way into the forest with one last look at the cheerful meadow behind you. As the trees envelop you, the temperature drops significantly and the last rays of sunlight are shielded by the growing foliage. It no longer feels like morning and the warm breeze has been replaced with an eerie rustling of cool air through the leaves. When you first enter, it is alive with the songs of a thousand creatures and their bustlings. As the deep green of the trees begin to meld with the darkness beyond, their sounds cease. You are totally alone.
The dirt path is mostly hidden by brush, but heads straight through the trees without turns. Once you've walked a few miles, you feel encased by the silence of the forest and thankful for the sounds of your footfalls. An ancient tree is dead ahead, splitting the path into two directions. Its massive branches twist up and out of the forest canopy above, it is vastly larger than any tree around it. Inscribed in its trunk is a chilling message, carved black from many years of decay.

Creaking open the front door, you peer into the hallway that has been partially obstructed by collapsed woodwork. You make your way into the next room, cautiously observing the room that has been illuminated by the moon and the various mirrors propped against every inch of the foyer. There is nothing but deadening silence and a deep, profound stillness that radiates from forgotten places. You squint and glance around, nothing but a pile of pillows on a sofa and an array of old books. You turn to leave.
The jewels of the chandelier above tinkle from the low grumble that permeated the air. Dust motes are kicked up and swirled about through the sun beams slant into the musty, velvet room. Confused, you take in the newly illuminated room and scream loudly. A crystal top rattles in the mouth of the decanter, the innards of a grand piano in another room vibrates, a discarded pearl earring rolls off the top of a dusty volume on a side table onto the plush rugs.
A hand appears from behind the back of of the sofa, reaching out to take a glass nearly full of a crimson liquid, nearly spilling as it disappears back behind the couch. You stumble backward, unable to speak for utter terror.

Night and day converge with each other in a disorienting timelessness. You cannot see any of the noise-makers but are comforted by their humming presence after so many miles of silence.
Through the heavy foliage you see the dark green waters of a flowing stream. No sunlight is beaming through the crack of the trees, so it must be nighttime. There are no stars above you, only blackness. Dipping your waterbag into the stream, you are shocked by its icy grip. Your fingers are instantly numb. A gust of wind rushes down the waterway and sends clouds of mist over the stream and the forest floor, blurring the lines between them.
Scanning the hazy mist, your eye catches something gold glinting from the grayness. It is bobbing, and must be floating along the water. Wading out into the stream, you wrap your fingers around the strange item. The object teems with magic, and slivers of light begin to peek out from the outlines of tiny stars and moons engraved along the wood of a skinny branch--no, a wand!--that begins to glow brighter, burning your hand. Power rushes through it into your palm but you do not drop it from the scalding pain. There is something magical about this wand.

A metal grating sound cuts through the silence, and you come upon a low stone wall with a broken iron gate, swinging to and fro on its hinges. There is no breeze to make it move, although you are dying for relief.
Beyond the stone wall, an ancient manor wastes away behind a thick covering of ivy leaves. Without the man-made border, the decrepit building would be unnoticeable behind the screen of the forest. The green cords of ivy have creeped into the empty window shells and wrap the house in a web that spills from every crevice. The front door, once lacquered with a blue paint, has faded and cracked into ribbons. <center><h1>About the [[Project->Home Page]]</h1></center>
<p>
As an extended Twine project for the ENG 757 Digital Pedagogy class with Dr. Kenneth Sherwood, I decided to write a small-scale "choose your own adventure story" that is a mixture of creative writing and fantasy gaming. I wanted to make a small, fun diversion that let you escape to a new world (through creative writing) while choosing your own fate. This project was extremely helpful for me because it sharpened my HTML and CSS coding skills, was a fun exercise in creative writing, and a bigger picture idea of how digital pedagogy can change the writing classroom.
In the future, I plan to use Twine for advanced composition classes. Students will be able to write in any format, in any genre, to flex their composition skills in a digital format. Using HTML and prose simultaneously, I became a much more digitally fluent composer and enjoyed the technical aspects of writing a story even more. Hopefully this hypertext shows this, because it was very fun to write.

With your heart pounding madly, you spend a few hours excavating the chest. Finally, you manage to open the chest. Inside, there is nothing but diamonds. The vast amount of it threatens to overwhelm you. The whole forest seems to light up with it. Looking around, you decide to bury it and save it for later.

A dark mountain looms above you. It seems to have appeared out of thin air, even though you have been climbing for some time. The black peak spikes out from the treetops as you crane your neck to view it. A large cavern is facing you, and you enter into the mountain's depths.
The only sound you hear is water dripping and its echo off the rocky cave walls. As you continue further into the underbelly of the mountain, the air grows even hotter than outside. You come to an underground river, twinkling blue from an unknown light source. Wading out into the stream, you notice that the light is glowing from a wand resting at the bottom of the stream.
